Do NOT restore from iTunes or iCloud backup as that will just leave you with the same corrupted issue.

It took years of searching and experimenting, but I finally found a procedure that worked. You know things are bad when you go to the Apple discussions forum and the “I have this question too” box has a count of nearly 500 (and that’s just the folks who found that thread). Finding hundreds of other discontented souls in the same boat wasn’t reassuring I learned that the problem has been around for *years*, with no official solution in sight. No matter what I tried, the shortcuts just repopulated themselves from the cloud on every device. The Frightenly UglyĮditing my poorly thought-out shortcuts in Settings/System Preferences did nothing. In case you’re shaking your head wondering why I didn’t just edit or delete the offending shortcuts, read on. This broke the flow and quickly became an itch I was desperate to get rid of. Imagine what that might look like with text expanding inside normal words: I can tell you it was something between an annoyance in some cases to a nightmare in others! Editing suddenly took two to three times as long, so I had to actually start looking at the screen, instead of around the room or out the window, while typing. I’m a touch typist and can rattle out 80+ words a minute when I’m on a roll. Some strings of characters in my shortcuts came up in normal typing my fault for choosing poorly.

What fun! Move over `omw` (on my way), I could now instantly and accurately enter long email addresses, have my contact details magically type themselves into existence, and add star ratings with a string of emojis - simply by typing strings of three characters (or whatever I wanted). The sun seemed to shine just a bit brighter the day I learned that it was possible to create text shortcuts! Blissfully unaware of the consequences, I embarked on a spree of creating shortcuts for anything and everything. When these devices work together well as a team (which is most of the time), life is good and work gets done. I have an iPhone X, a 9.7" iPad Pro, a 12.9" iPad Pro, a 2019 15" MacBook Pro, and a 27" iMac. Settings screenshot by the author The Good
